Stanford Alpine Chalet History - The original Chalet was built in 1963 by a group of physics professors from Stanford University. Their families primarily used the facility as a communal ski cabin. When their children had grown up and headed off to college, the group donated the building to the University. In 1986, the Stanford Alumni Association purchased the Stanford Alpine Chalet from the University for $1.00 The Chalet primarily functioned as a winter retreat for Stanford Alumni. It was not until 1991 that the Chalet repositioned itself into a conference and family reunion center in addition to the winter operations. This new change helped to make the Chalet a year-round vacation and meeting destination.

The Chalet was remodeled in 1997, taking it from its original dormitory style to its present-day look and charm. The Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) invested nearly a half-million dollars to renovate the facility. The renovation included a new roof, heating system, bathrooms, furniture, lighting, carpet, paint, and decks.

The University and the Alumni Association have now merged and the Stanford Alpine Chalet is run by SAA Sierra Programs, LLC. The Chalet now serves alumni and non-alumni guests all year long.
